The tech giant is moving forward with an augmented reality headset that could make its way to store shelves in 2020, Bloomberg is reporting, citing people who claim to have knowledge of its plans. Unlike most current mobile-based virtual reality setups, which fully immerse a user in a digital world, Apple's headset will have its own display, operating system, and system-on-a-chip (SoC).
Apple's hope is to squeeze its graphics processors, AI chip and CPU into a smaller, one-size-fits-all package, akin to what it has done for the Apple Watch, the Bloomberg article stated.
Since the release of Apple's iOS 11 mobile operating system on September 19, over 1,000 AR apps have been approved for the iPhone and iPad. But while we wait for a hardware announcement, Apple will reportedly release a new version of ARKit next year that will have more advanced tracking abilities. Cook also said that the display technology required for that kind of product poses huge challenges. With augmented reality, you aren't shut off from the world around you, but virtual elements can be overlaid on the real world.
Meek Mill Sent To Prison Again Over Alleged Parole Violation
In a Facebook post on Monday, the music mogul called out the justice system for its unfair treatment of another black man. A number of celebrities have reacted to Meek Mill's prison sentence on social media, including Jay-Z and Kevin Hart .
The report further goes to point that Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke on Good Morning America saying "We're already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn".
As Apple's team has no prototype on which to experiment, the engineers are apparently using HTC Vive headsets for testing purposes. Sources say the team, led by former Dolby Labs engineering boss Mike Rockwell, now consists of several hundred engineers from across the company.
Of particular note here is the distinction between virtual and augmented reality.
Antonio Conte suggests omission of Chelsea stalwart could be long-term
The coach has to make the best decision for the team and the best decision for the team was to play with Christensen", Conte said. That's according to bookies Betway who reckon the Brazilian will be packing his bags.
This latest report provides a better picture of where Apple is at in the development process, trying to get away from the traditional model of using a smartphone as the screen and engine. They're reportedly working on multiple hardware and software projects under the codename "T288".
Apple hasn't yet finalized how users will control the headset and launch apps, but Apple typically "locks" device designs 12 months before shipping, which still gives the company most of 2018 to do so. Games are also a potential use case for AR, which Apple has demoed several times with its phones.
In September, at the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller touted it as the "first smartphone designed for AR".
