In Pittsburgh and Tempe, Arizona, Uber has been testing a self-driving Volvo prototype for a little over a year now, with safety drivers in the front seat ready to intervene if the program fails or stalls.
According to reports released today Volvo is set to supply 24,000 vehicles that can support autonomous technology to Uber over three years starting from 2019. Uber will be adding its own sensors and software to these cars so that they can drive themselves.
Uber wasn't immediately available to comment, and Volvo deferred questions to Uber. The exact terms of the deal weren't initially disclosed, but an Uber spokesperson confirmed to Mashable via email that the fleet size will be around 24,000 vehicles.
