Militants killed at least 235 people at a mosque in Egypt's north Sinai region yesterday, detonating a bomb and shooting at fleeing worshippers and ambulances, state media and witnesses said. Although have already been a prime target of terrorism over the past years, India condemned the mosque attack, saying the "heinous" terror act is a "stark reminder of the need to develop a global strategy to fight terrorism".
The Sinai branch is one of Islamic State's surviving branches following the collapse of its self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq after military defeats by US-backed forces. However, dozens of Christians have been killed in similar attacks on churches across Egypt.
Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi called the attack "criminal" and said it "will not go unpunished".
"In this hour of tragedy, the government and the people of India stand by the government and the people of Egypt", he said. "My honest condolences to all those affected and to the people of Egypt".

Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a cable of condolences over the victims. "This terrorist act will strengthen our resolve, steadfastness and will to stand up to, resist and battle against terrorism".
Numerous attacks, some of which were carried out by the local branch of the Islamic State terrorist organization, are aimed at police and security forces in the Sinai Peninsula.
Police sources told the Associated Press that men in four off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers inside the mosque during a sermon.
