Delhi accounted for 38.8 per cent of total IPC cases, followed by Bengaluru (8.9 per cent) and Mumbai (7.7 per cent).
Madhya Pradesh, which has the fifth highest population in the country, has again earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of rape cases registered among all States previous year.
A total of 48,31,515 cognisable crimes - which include major crimes like rape, murder, kidnappings and rioting - comprising "29,75,711 IPC crimes" and "18,55,804 Special and Local Laws (SLL)" crimes were reported in 2016. UP is also national leader when it came to crimes against women- 49,262 cases or 14.5% were reported in the state. "The states where the digitisation and literacy rates are higher, the cyber crime cases are bound to, naturally, go up", said Brijesh Singh, Inspector General of Police, Head, Maharashtra Cyber cell.
"We have charge sheeted 90 per cent of accused in crimes against women in 2016".

Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of crimes against women. While Delhi reported around 15,297 cases, Mumbai reported around 6,096 cases followed by Patna with 4,547 cases.
Cases of crimes against children have hugely increased between 2014 and 2016, by 19.6%. In crimes against children, Mumbai ranked second with 3,400 cases, amounting to 17 per cent of all such offences.
A total of 32 people also died or disappeared in the country past year while they were under the remand of the police. The crimes against women included 2,183 cases of assault with intent to outrage modesty, 1,142 cases of kidnapping and abduction and 712 cases of rape.
Uttar Pradesh missed the dubious distinction of recording most rape cases in the country by a whisker. Madhya Pradesh, which is led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was second on the list with 8.9% crimes, whereas Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra was third with 8.8%.
