The worldwide search for the 44 crew of the missing ARA San Juan submarine has officially been called off by the Argentine Navy, although the search for the vessel will continue in shallow waters.
The ARA San Juan was ordered back to port, before the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation detected a "hydro-acoustic anomaly", which the navy says could be the noise of the submarine imploding. 44 crew members were on board the vessel. "We will continue the search. there will not be people saved". On December 1, the Argentine Navy declared that the rescue operation was over but the search for the submarine continues.
The search involving 13 countries will now focus on scouring the sea bed for the vessel, Balbi said.
'Despite the magnitude of these efforts, we've been unable to find the submarine'.
Police question settlers who killed Palestinian attacker during trip
Parents escorting the children reportedly said at least 30 Palestinian men surrounded them and started throwing rocks. Palestinian sources identified the dead man as Mahmoud Odeh, 48, a farmer from Qusra.
Hopes of finding survivors had already dimmed with experts saying the crew had only enough oxygen to last seven to 10 days if the vessel remained intact underwater.
A massive worldwide rescue mission had been mounted for the ARA San Juan since it disappeared on November 15 while traveling from the southern port of Ushuaia to its base at Mar del Plata.
The search for the San Juan has employed some of the latest technology in one of the largest efforts of its kind.
The San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric TR-1700 class submarine, was commissioned in the 1980s and was most recently refitted in 2014.
