Conyers, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who was first elected to the House in 1964, stepped down last month as the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Shortly thereafter, the RNC renewed their financial support of Roy Moore's campaign.

Conyers became an icon during the civil rights movement. Conyers was called the unofficial "dean of the House" and was its longest-serving member until his announcement.
