Franken was right about one thing: It is unfair (though not, perhaps, "an irony", as he put it) that he will leave the Senate and Roy Moore, who has been accused of sexually pursuing teenage girls, will probably enter it.
In a well-coordinated social media attack, 12 of the Senate's 16 Democratic women took to Twitter or Facebook to demand Franken's resignation.
"I know who I really am", he said.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton said he has not yet decided on who he will appoint to fill Franken's seat, but expects to make a decision shortly.
Franken apologized for his behavior after earlier accusations and said he would cooperate with a Senate Ethics Committee investigation.

After Kemplin came forward, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Democratic leader would not comment on the allegation against one of his fellow Democrats.
"Enough is enough", Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said.
A torrent of Democrats quickly followed Ms Gillibrand. The woman, Stephanie Kemplin, said Franken cupped her breast while she was deployed in the Middle East during the Iraq War.
"I'm shocked and appalled by Senator Franken's behaviour", said senator Patty Murray.

A fourth woman, an army veteran, alleged Mr Franken cupped her breast during a photo on a USO tour in 2003.
