Cheese is typically considered more of an indulgence than a health food, but a new review of research suggests that it may not be as bad for you as once thought. Those who ate small amounts of cheese daily showed a 14 per cent less chance of developing heart disease, while stroke risk was slashed by 10 per cent.
The attention of specialists was attracted by the fact that the people of France, who usually consume fat-rich food, including cheeses, relatively rarely suffer from heart diseases.
Dutch and Chinese researchers teamed up to analyze data from 15 prior studies, tracking over 200,000 participants for at least 10 years. Until additional studies confirm such findings, it is important to remember that cheese is high in saturated fats, which can be harmful to heart health in high amounts. In 2015, the population of the United States consumed the equivalent of of cheese per person, with Cheddar and mozzarella being the most popular choices. It could be that people who eat cheese on a daily basis are healthier overall, or have more disposable income and higher socioeconomic statuses. Cheese also has an unsaturated fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid which may affect cholesterol by lowering your bad LDL levels and raising the good HDL levels.
"There is some evidence that cheese-as a substitute for milk, for example-may actually have a protective effect on the heart", says Stewart. Researchers didn't specify whether one type of cheese was better than the rest.
