Customers will text one of two short codes - depending on whether they want to keep their current number or not - which will be the same across all networks.
The simple text messaging system looks to alleviate this pain and bypass the need to bounce between various departments of a telecoms provider when swapping networks.
"For more than a decade Three has been encouraging Ofcom to do more to ensure that consumers can easily switch mobile phone provider and get the best deal", said a Three spokesperson. "Our changes will make it quicker and easier for mobile phone users to get a better deal", said Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom's consumer group director.

The unique switching code will be valid for 30 days. These changes will benefit the customer considerably; Ofcom estimates that this will save about £10m per year.

Consumers are to receive the response immediately, with business accounts having a response within two working days.
