A London-based lawyer pleaded guilty to lying to US officials investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election about his contacts with Rick Gates, a former associate of onetime Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
The charging document said that while answering Federal Bureau of Investigation agents' questions about his work on the report, van der Zwaan lied that he last communicated with Gates in mid-August and another unnamed person, only identified as "Person A", in 2014.
The document also said van der Zwaan deleted emails sought by the special counsel's office and a law firm, referred to as "Law Firm A", including an email between himself and the unnamed person.
The charging document also says he claimed that he exchanged an "innocuous text message" with Gates in mid-August 2016, and said falsely that was their last interaction.
The attorney, Alex van der Zwaan, the son-in-law of one of Russia's richest men, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to a charge of lying to the Special Counsel's office.
Manafort and Gates are accused of directing a covert Washington lobbying campaign on behalf of pro-Russian Ukrainian interests.
