Earlier in the day, Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled that a disqualified person can not lead a political party, a judgement which directly affected ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as it was being led by former PM Nawaz Sharif despite a July 2017 verdict declaring him ineligible to hold public office under Article 62, 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
"Ineligible person can not hold the office of party presidency", the court said.
The petitions challenged specific clauses of the Elections Act 2017, stating that Sharif Nawaz's appointment as party president is in violation of Clause 5 of the Political Parties Order 2002 and Article 17 of the Constitution.
While announcing the verdict, the apex court said that a person who doesn't qualify on Article 62 and 63 of the constitution can also not hold the office of presidency of any political party.

The judgement also put the Senate election, scheduled for March 3, under a cloud. The standoff was ended by the military, which removed both of them from office in 1999.
