A Washington Post investigation past year found that Backpage was using a contractor in the Philippines to contact prostitutes on other websites, seeking to lure their ads to Backpage and creating the ads for those prostitutes in advance.
Michael Lacey, a founder of the website, was charged Friday in a 93-count indictment. They have also maintained that the site is protected from criminal charges by a federal statute, the Communications Decency Act.

Part of the Department of Justice's issue with websites like backpage.com is that they facilitate sex trafficking by giving sheepish people access to victims that they may not be fearless enough to approach on the street - leading to more business for traffickers and driving up the demand for young children who were forced into prostitution.
This bill was the reason that Craigslist, a popular classfied network based in San Francisco, shut down its personals section at the end of March.
The company's CEO and other officials were arrested and a series of court cases ensued.
Internet firms and advocates for free speech online had opposed Fosta, arguing that it would lead to censorship and was not necessary because the federal government already had the ability to prosecute people who used the internet to facilitate prostitution. They singled out Backpage, citing dozens of instances in which minors had been trafficked via the site.

The FBI has seized and shut down classified advertising website Backpage.com for being an alleged facilitator of sex trafficking: according to the DOJ, the site has earned $500 million from prostitution since its inception.
