After President Donald Trump used former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore's loss to dissuade West Virginians from voting for coal baron and ex-convict Don Blankenship, Blankenship hit back Monday by reminding voters that Trump backed Moore before his shocking loss.
Even President Trump thinks Blankenship is a loser. And it's hard to oversell how disastrous this all could be - not just for Republican efforts to defeat Sen.
"To the great people of West Virginia we have, together, a really great chance to keep making a big difference", Trump said in a Twitter post. McConnell, who has opposed Blankenship's Senate run, is married to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.
Blankenship is running a scorched-earth campaign, attacking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
The Blankenship campaign's own internal survey puts the former coal boss far ahead; the poll of 1,000 West Virginia Republican voters gave Mr. Blankenship 37 percent, compared to just 20 percent for Mr. Morrisey and 15 percent for Mr. Jenkins.

It's [injuries] not something that I think about, if I did there would be no point in playing tomorrow. We, with respect, aren't going to do it because they didn't do it.
U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey are Blankenship's rivals in the West Virginia race, one of several primary contests where Republicans are wrestling over their allegiance to Trump. Moore lost a deep red seat to Democrat Doug Jones, thinning Republican's majority in the U.S. Senate to the current 51-49 margin.
"The establishment is misinforming him because they do not want me to be in the US Senate and promote the President's agenda", Blankenship said. Trump won the district by nearly 50 points in 2016, but the districts ancestrally blue roots and historic support for Manchin may create a competitive race in November.
The calls were followed Sunday by Morrisey trying to have Blankenship disqualified from the primary for failing to submit a financial disclosure, allegedly in violation of election law and perhaps of his probation.
Blankenship argued that neither Jenkins or Morrisey could beat Manchin without his support, but he would prevail over the Democratic stalwart "even without the support of the establishment". He's also referred to McConnell as "Cocaine Mitch".
Blankenship served a year in jail for conspiring to violate mine safety laws, which was related to an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010 that killed 29 miners.

A decline in consumer spending in the first quarter could derail economic growth in the consumer-oriented economy, she said. It now forecasts another two rate rises this year, although an increasing number of policymakers see three as possible.

Blankenship has centered his candidacy around attacking fellow Republican Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, accusing him of undermining Trump.
"No more fumbles like Alabama", he added.
Both McCready and Manning have out-fundraised their opponents, Pittenger and GOP Rep. Ted Budd, a sign that the party could have a realistic shot with voters in a suburban district President Trump won in 2016, but may have fallen out of favor within the first year and a half of his administration. "We need to win in November".
