Manafort, who was President Donald Trump's campaign chairman for several months, last week asked for his July 25 trial in Alexandria federal court to be delayed until this fall, saying his incarceration in Virginia's Northern Neck has made it too hard to prepare. Federal prosecutors argued on Wednesday against postponing his financial crimes trial.
Defense lawyers called the statements from special counsel Robert Mueller's office "self-serving and inaccurate".
The conditions under which he's being held are considered standard for numerous high-profile inmates housed in the jail's VIP section because of security concerns.
Manafort has been jailed since last month after a judge revoked his house arrest.

Now, Apple should be testing iOS 12 , watchOS 5, and tvOS 12 exclusively, as you shouldn't expect to see anymore iOS 11 updates. When you connect the iPhone to a computer, the two devices exchange cryptographic keys and establish trust.
In response, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III directed that Manafort be moved from his current jail to one in Alexandria, Virginia, where the federal courthouse is located, so that he can be closer to his lawyers.
"On the monitored prison phone calls, Manafort has mentioned that he is being treated like a 'VIP, '" prosecutors quoted him as having said.
Judge Ellis addressed Manafort's complaints about location by ordering his transfer to an Alexandria prison. He's also set to be tried in Washington, D.C.in September on separate charges.
In a court document filed on Wednesday, prosecutors said Manafort enjoyed a larger-than-average cell at the Warsaw facility, including "his own bathroom and shower facility, his own personal telephone and his own workspace to prepare for trial".

The transfer was ordered after Manafort's attorneys complained that being held in a jail so far away from Alexandria, the location of the July 25 trial, was impeding his ability to prepare for the trial. He also wants the trial moved to Roanoke.
The prosecutors' filing says Manafort has everything he needs to prepare for the trial, including his own phone and computer.
They said Mueller's team 'does not pause to consider the reasons a detained defendant might have to make his situation sound better when speaking with concerned friends and family'. Manafort responded by requesting he be allowed to stay in Warsaw, citing safety concerns and "the challenges he will face in adjusting to a new place of confinement" just before trial, Bloomberg reports.
