The Kremlin, meanwhile, denied anew that it tried to sway the election.
But the indictment identifies the defendants as officers with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU.
The indictment (which can be read in full at Vox) accuses 12 members of the Russian GRU agency with hacking against staffers and infrastructure of the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
On Aug. 15, 2016, the indictment says, Guccifer 2.0 reached out to someone in regular contact with the Trump campaign and asked the person if he or she had seen anything "interesting in the docs I posted?"
Apparently, there are no allegations in the indictment that could point towards the active involvement of Americans in such acts. He added that President Trump had been briefed on its contents.
But they have found no evidence of any tampering by an American - which does include President Trump, who must be pleased as he readies for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin July 16 in Helsinki.

The DoJ reports that the indictment does not claim that the alleged criminal activities "altered the vote count or changed the outcome of the 2016 elections".
Among those who have been indicted in connection to the special counsel probe are former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, campaign adviser Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser on the campaign, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
