A blob of hot volcanic lava struck an ocean tour boat just off the Big Island of Hawaii on Monday, injuring almost two dozen people in the worst casualty incident to date from the ongoing eruption of the Kilauea Volcano.
"Eyewitnesses report that it ripped through the tour boat roof and landed on several people - injuring both passengers and crew members", according to Hawaii News Now reporter Mileka Lincoln. The nine others who were injured drove themselves to the hospital with what the fire department calls "superficial" injuries. The interaction of lava with the ocean creates "laze", a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that drifts downwind and can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs.
The Kilauea volcano has been erupting for two months now, which has led to a bespoke tourist industry around boats taking tourists out to sea to watch lava crashing into the water.
The lava is from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, which erupted in May and has been spewing out gas and molten rock ever since.
The boat was off the island's Eastern coast on Monday morning when the volcano sent what officials said was a basketball-sized "lava bomb" through the boat's roof and peppered it with volcanic debris.
He did not observe "any major explosions", so he navigated his vessel closer, to about 228 metres from the lava. It has destroyed more than 700 homes since then. The safety zone now stands at 300-meters (984 feet) with no exclusions. "And yes, it's now no longer an "island" thanks to the lava that's rejoined it with the flow front on land", the USGS said on Twitter in a reply to a question.

The retailer had launched a promotion before the World Cup promising to pay out if Belgium scored more than 15 goals. The only time that team made it out of the group stage was when it reached the round of 16 in 1998.
The Hawaii County Fire Dept. says a railing on the tour boat was also damaged by the lava bomb.
It is very likely that it is part of the flow of fissure 8 that is entering the ocean, the USGS says.
He added that after the boat was hit, those in the tour group quickly pulled together to help one another.
