He faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty.
The Administration's action is an unprecedented escalation against Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that hosts America's largest foreign stockpile of nuclear weapons.
The Trump administration followed through on its threat and hit Turkish Minister of Justice Abdulhamit Gul and Minister of Interior Suleyman Soylu with sanctions for being leaders "of an entity that has engaged in, or whose members have engaged in, serious human rights abuse".
'Collusion Is Not a Crime'
Trump believed the bureau's investigation was over and that Flynn had been cleared, his attorneys claimed. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) wrote on Twitter on Monday, citing a reference in the federal code.

The sanctions are being prepared under the Global Magnitsky Act of 2016, which allows the USA government to target individuals, companies or other entities involved in corruption or human-rights abuses anywhere in the world.
The global order, included in the fiscal 2017 Defense Department funding authorization, expanded authority under the 2012 Magnitsky Act, named after a Russian lawyer and auditor who uncovered tax fraud and graft linked to the Kremlin, leading to his arrest and death in prison under mysterious circumstances.
On all those issues, Turkey has worked at cross purposes with the United States in recent years and is only more likely to become an irritant more than an ally after the sanctions escalation.
