"The child was found on the inner portion of the compound", Sheriff Hogrefe said.
Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe told CNN that investigators looking for the boy went back to the Amalia compound because they believed they knew roughly where to search.
Clayton County Police have been searching for the toddler and 39-year-old Siraj Wahhaj since December 2017.
Hogrefe's deputies are searching for the child, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Georgia authorities in Clayton County, where officials say the boy was living before his father took him around December 1, 2017. The adults, two men and three women, were holding 11 children there in what the Sheriff's Office compared to "third-world conditions". However, there was no sign of Abdul.
"Many more rounds of ammo were found in the makeshift compound that consists of a small travel trailer buried in the ground covered by plastic with no water, plumbing, or electricity", the sheriff's office said.
However, it took a plea for help and the search for a missing Georgia boy to finally draw sheriff's deputies to the desolate site that was walled off by stacks of old tires, wooden pallets and other debris.
Authorities said at a news conference that they have not positively identified the remains as missing Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj.

"We just figured they were doing what we were doing, getting a piece of land and getting off the grid", said Anderson, who moved to New Mexico from Seattle with his wife seven years ago.
Law enforcement then "had enough probable cause for a search warrant" to search for Wahhaj and the boy on the property, Hogrefe said.
According to the affidavit, written by Hogrefe, CYFD conducted interviews with some of the children, some of whom said Abdul-Ghani had died at the compound.
Aleks Kostich, managing attorney in the Taos County public defender's office, said the office was gathering information and assigning attorneys to the defendants.
"I have learned that at least two of the children disclosed that AG Wahhaj was at the compound and in poor health and died there", Hogrefe wrote. Abdul-Ghani's father, Siraj Wahhaj, was arrested.
Hujrah Wahhaj, 38; and Subhannah Wahhaj, 35, were charged with child abuse related to the alleged neglect and abuse of children, who were found living in "filthy" conditions and with hardly any food, the Taos County Sheriff's Office said.
Before fleeing with his son, Wahhaj reportedly told Ramzi that he wanted to perform an exorcism on his son, believing that Abdul-Ghani was possessed by the devil.
Gates testifies he and Manafort committed crimes
Gates also testified he and Manafort knew it was a crime because they had been notified by Manafort's accountants in emails. In opening arguments, Manafort's lawyer defended his client by blaming Gates for the offenses alleged against his client.
The children wore dirty rags for clothing with no shoes, and were surrounded by weapons and rounds of ammunition, authorities said.
The message was to the point: "We are starving and need food and water", it said in part.
A file photo released by the Taos county sheriff's office on 3 August shows an aerial view of a rural compound in Amalia, New Mexico.
Morten was additionally charged with harbouring a fugitive, and Wahhaj was held, without bail, over the Georgia arrest warrant for child abduction.
Property owner Jason Badger said he had concerns about the compound near the Colorado border. They and the three women all face 11 counts of child abuse.
That changed when officers received a message to a third party that was forwarded by colleagues from Georgia and which was thought to have been sent from the camp area. But he eventually stopped visiting the compound. They were arrested in the town of Taos and detained. It was not clear over the weekend if they had lawyers.
What authorities found Friday was what Hogrefe called "the saddest living conditions and poverty" he has seen in 30 years on the job.
