The fraud trial for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort enters its eighth day as prosecutors say they plan on resting their case by the end of Friday. There have been exceptions, like when Gates said that he might have also embezzled from the Trump inauguration committee by inflating his expenses, and when he testified about how Manafort reached out to talk about securing a banker who loaned him money tickets to the inauguration and potentially a position in the administration.
Laporta was given immunity from prosecution for her testimony in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
IRS agent Michael Welch said the total includes foreign wire transfers to USA vendors like landscapers and clothiers, wire transfers to buy property, and income reclassified as loans.
"I was critical of counsel for ... allowing an expert to remain in the courtroom", Ellis told the jury prior to Thursday's testimony.
"I'm here. I'm trying to change", he said. Defence lawyers have made blaming Gates, Manafort's right-hand man for a decade, a key plank of their defence.
"No, I did not", Gates responded. While the charges aren't related to Manafort's time on the campaign, the trial is being eyed closely by the President and his team as they negotiate a potential interview between Trump and Mueller's team.

Clayton County Police have been searching for the toddler and 39-year-old Siraj Wahhaj since December 2017. Property owner Jason Badger said he had concerns about the compound near the Colorado border.
Manafort is accused of filing fraudulent information to secure $16 million in loans from Calk's bank.
Gates also admitted that he covertly wired funds out of Manafort's offshore accounts to line his own pockets, using the same tricks he deployed to help doctor and falsify records for Manafort.
Manafort and Gates were the first two individuals indicted in Mueller's investigation into potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.
The prosecution has put forward almost 20 witnesses - including Manafort's longtime deputy Rick Gates - and a trove of documentary evidence as they've sought to prove Manafort defrauded banks and concealed millions of dollars in offshore bank accounts from the IRS. Downing asked Gates whether he had told prosecutors that he had four extramarital affairs.
His actions came under scrutiny as part of the broader investigation into the Trump campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election run by Mueller. "But Mr. Manafort was a longtime client of the firm, and I didn't think I should do that".
However, the Manafort case - as President Donald Trump has been quick to point out - focuses on Manafort's business dealings and has no direct connection to Manafort's work with the Trump campaign. Welch said the monetary figure was based on an accounting method used by Manafort.

President Trump nevertheless criticised Democrat Governor Brown, repeating his attacks on California's environmental laws. The southern perimeter of the River Fire has been contained and controlled for several days.
"I may have made a mistake. Mr. Manafort had the same path", Gates said.
In one exchange published in court Wednesday, Manafort instructs his Cypriot lawyer, Kypros Chrysostomides - referred to in court as "Dr. K" because, according to Gates, his name is hard to spell and pronounce - to transfer money from the Manafort-controlled Leviathan Ltd.
For this Manafort was paid US$4million a year, in quarterly payments of US$1million, Gates recalled, though at some point the currency switched from United States dollars to Euros. "This is an especially severe risk when the core of the case is the testimony of a co-conspirator who is admittedly a thief, liar, and embezzler".
Ellis and Andres continued to butt heads Wednesday, after Ellis once again reminded the prosecutors they should wrap their case quickly.
In the six days since the trial began, the jury has heard from 15 witnesses including two of Manafort's former accountants and his former bookkeeper.
Mr Gates pleaded guilty months later and agreed to co-operate in Mr Mueller's investigation of Mr Manafort, the only American charged by the special counsel to opt for trial instead of a guilty plea.

Chelsea have slammed the shut the possibility of their superstar Eden Hazard leaving the club for Real Madrid this summer. Willian has insisted that he is happy to stay and fight for his place in the Chelsea FC first team under Maurizio Sarri .
This was a way to decrease Manafort's taxable income, added Gates, who did not report the money to Manafort's book-keeper or accountants. Gates also provided the first witness testimony that overlaps with Trump's presidential campaign.
