NY state governor Andrew Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon, Broadway actor and former Sex and the City TV star, clashed and swapped insults in their only scheduled, televised debate before their primary race to decide the Democratic nomination for the governorship.
After accusing the debate host, WCBS-TV, of being too acquiescent to Cuomo's demands ahead of the debate, Rebecca Katz called for the event hall at Hofstra University on Long Island to be 76 degrees, the New York Times reported. Two topics in particular got the two trading jabs. immigration and public transportation.
Nixon, a former co-star of HBO's "Sex and the City", went after Cuomo early on, calling him an "Albany insider" and a corrupt liar.
The debate was lively as Nixon and Cuomo threw jabs at each other, though both remained civil throughout the course of the evening. "We have either incompetence or corruption, which is it?" she charged.

"Yes", Cuomo said. "Yes, yes and yes". Nixon herself told Refinery29 "I'll debate the governor in a parka if I have to because the people of NY deserve a debate, and insurgent, female candidates have a right to make their voices heard". "Working men and women don't have corporations", Cuomo said.
"Yeah, as soon as you do", Cuomo said.

"Why, when we have pulled out of the Paris climate accord, why have you not fought for the Climate & Community Protection Act?"
Over the next hour, the governor surprised Nixon by going negative, ripping into his challenger as a phony who concealed her tax records (she has not) and would run the state into debt-driven chaos.
"I am a person", said Nixon, to applause. The legislation, which Cuomo has refused to back, has thrice passed in the Assembly but failed to come up for a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate.
On the deteriorating state of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Cuomo stuck to his line blaming New York City for failing to pay its fair share to make repairs. The current governor has a long record of government service and had raised almost 50 times more money than Nixon, according to financial disclosures filed last month.
