Japan has committed 25,000 rescuers to search Hokkaido, Japan's second-largest island, where there are reports of 30 people missing and 300 injured. The number missing had earlier been put at 19.

According to the Associated Press, "Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko told reporters that the extensive power outage was caused by an emergency shutdown of the main thermal power plant that supply half of the electricity to all of Hokkaido".
Local media said the dead also included an 82-year-old man who fell down the stairs at his home during the quake and that around 130 people had sustained minor injuries.
The quake triggered landslides that crushed homes in Atsuma.
Hit by the blackout, Hokkaido Bank was unable to open 113 of its 140 outlets in the region, while Kirin Brewery Co. canceled operations at its plant in Chitose on Thursday.
